About this park/green space

Cuerden Valley Park is a country park covering 650 acres between Preston and Chorley running along the valley of the River Lostock. The northern part of the park was laid out in the 19th century as parkland for Cuerden Hall and retains its character to this day. The Pinetum and Walled Orchard near the Hall have recently been restored. The valley is a haven for wildlife with a mosaic of habitats. The lake is a good place to spot Great Crested Grebe and Grey Heron that nest on the island. Bluebells carpet many of the woodlands in spring along with Wood Anemone and Dogs Mercury. Look out for Tree Creeper and Nut Hatches and listen for Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming. Out on the meadows look out for Common Spotted Orchid and Yellow Rattle whilst the Speckled Wood Butterfly and dragonflies patrol the woodland edge. Cattle and sheep graze the valley sides and the Park runs its own flock of Jacob sheep which migrate around the park helping to keep the wildflower meadows in good condition. There is over 16 km of footpath to explore with a level cycle route forming part of the link from Preston to Chorley running long the spine of the park. Plenty of room for even the most energetic of children to let off steam. Dogs are welcome but please keep them under close control near livestock. “Do you know where the wine tasting is???”  A frequently heard question during the day.  And no one knew where the Walton Fox’s wine tasting gazebo was.  Probably because it wasn’t there?  What a shame.

The weather held out until 3pm when it started to spot with rain and people started to leave.  Up until that point there were lots of people there and lots to see and do.

2012 Cuerden Valley Park Calendar Photography Competition Rules

• Cuerden Valley Park is owned and managed by Cuerden Valley Park Trust an independent Charity. The trust does not receive any income from local or national government but survives on income from its investments, grants, land rental and its users. During the 19 years that the trust has owned and managed the park it has been developed into a green oasis in an increasingly urban surrounding. Woodlands have matured with sensitive management, the biodiversity of the meadows increased and ponds become a haven for invertebrates. The park has gained the Green Flag the national award for open space management and the woodlands are FSC certified for their sustainable management.

• The theme of the competition will be “Seasons in the Park”
• Cuerden Valley Park will select 12 photographs of the park, Landscapes or Nature as part of this Competition to be included in the 2012 Cuerden Valley Park Calendar.
• The Photographs must have been taken in Cuerden Valley Park during the 12 months proceeding the entry date
• Entry fee of £1 per photograph with a maximum entry of 4 photographs per individual.
• There are 2 categories for entrants:- 1) Junior (up to 16 years, age as on the 30th June 2011)
2) open.
• A prize will be awarded to the best in each category.
• Copyright of the photograph must belong to the entrant
• Entrants can only submit their own work
• Photographs may be taken with a digital or other camera with minimal digital enhancement.
• Photographs must be clear and can be in colour or mono chrome
• Entries are to be supplied in the following format(s)

Prints: Submissions must be on large format prints – no bigger than A4
Digital: Please provide us with a CD containing the image/s.
Maximum file size A4 at 300dpi (2480x3508pixels). Make sure any shot you send on (CD or E-mail) are high Quality JPEGs. Ensuring the title of your entry is on the entry form.

• If sending entry by E-mail, please send a copy of your entry form together with the entry fee to the address below.
• Photographs will only be returned if a stamped address envelope is sent with the entry form.
• Entrants confirm that the photograph has not and will not be submitted to other photographic competitions
• It is the entrants’ responsibility to ensure that all necessary permissions are obtained from any people who may feature in a photograph
• The entry form must be clearly completed and must be attached with the photograph entry
• Entries not accompanied by a signed entry form will not be included in the competition

• A panel of judges, appointed by Cuerden Valley Park Trust, will select the winning entries. The panels’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into
• The closing date for entries is 30th June 2011
• The winners will be notified, in writing, by 30th July 2011
• Photographs will be exhibited (site to be announced)
• 12 Best entries will be reproduced as part of the 2012 Cuerden Valley Park Calendar

Today saw the big clear up to return the walled orchard back to it’s peaceful normality. No damage as such, the lawns will recover quickly. Our thanks go to all the volunteers and park staff, without these people these events wouldn’t take place.

And relax…..

After a rather hectic first two days of the Beer Festival Sunday turned out to be a very relaxed and chilled out day.  We had a steady stream of customers, some of whom had become regulars to our busy bar.  Yet again we sold out of the more popular beers but we had ample supplies of alternative canned and bottled drinks.

Again we had some sunshine and then rather heavy rain, at one point we had both.  Thankfully there was plenty of shelter.

So it was last orders please….and when can we do this again????
